Frank Lloyd Wright, the
famous architect, began creating Taliesin West in 1937 to serve as his
home, studio and architectural laboratory. It was designated the
status of National Historic Landmark by the National Park Service, and
is now recommended for inclusion on the World Heritage List of Cultural
Properties.
Today, Taliesin West
(pronounced Tally EHS´sen) is small community of about 70 students,
architects, and administrators who study and perpetuate his bold,
distinctive architectural concepts. Located 13 miles north of old
Scottsdale, the facilities include theaters for film and the performing
arts, architectural offices, pools, gardens, and terraces, as well as
the living quarters of the residents and a workshop and studios of the
Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture and the Taliesin
Fellowship.
Taliesin West is the
international headquarters of The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, and
regularly scheduled personal and group tours of the site are available.
"The tours are led by knowledgeable guides who explain how the
architecture relates to the natural desert and provide a general
overview of Wright's basic theories of design, history of the site, and
activities of Taliesin Fellowship community life," according to the
Foundation's website.
