Magnificent sandstone
pillars tower a thousand feet above the desert floor in the Monument
Valley Navajo Tribal Park in northern Arizona. Created by the forces
of wind and rain eroding the rocks over the last 50 million years,
the whole area is a spectacular place to see. The park has a visitor
center with a restaurant which specializes in native Navajo cuisine,
and a souvenir shop. Guided tours by open-air jeeps and horseback
provide up-close looks at the monuments and other landmarks.
To get to the park, take US-89 north out
of Flagstaff for about 60 miles. Turn east on US-160 and go another
83 miles past Black Mesa to US-163 and go north through Kayenta for
22 miles. Just as after crossing the Utah border, turn east again on
Navajo Route 42 and go back into Arizona just 7 miles to the Visitor
Center.
