Tourists view the ancient Anastazi ruins at Montezuma's Castle at Camp Verde in Arizona. Photo by Carstens and Fortino
Although it is not a
castle in the classic Medieval sense, and it was built and abandoned
almost one hundred years before Montezuma was born, this cliff
dwelling is one of the most well preserved in North America. The
structure was created for secure living quarters by the Sinagua
Indians more than 600 years ago and provided convenient access to
the resources of the Verde Valley. Why they left is still a mystery,
but it does provide important insights into their way of life and
the culture of their time period.
To get to Montzuma Castle National
Monument, take Interstate-10 north from Phoenix for about 78 miles.
Take Exit 288 about 4 miles past the main Camp Verde exit, and
follow the signs to the north about two more miles.
