| Breath-taking views,
fascinating history, and jeep and horseback tours into the canyon
await the visitor at Canyon de Chelly (pronounced de-SHAY). Looking
into Canyon de Chelly is a spectacular sight, and there are ancient
ruins of cliff dwellings and petroglyphs within the canyon itself.
Jeep and horse rentals are available at Thunderbird Lodge just
outside the monument. Hiking on trails into the canyon requires a
Park Service permit and an authorized Navajo guide except for the
White House Ruins Trail. Facilities include hiking, camping and
picnicking. Backcountry camping is allowed, but requires a permit
and guide. Located in the
northeast "Four-Corners" area of Arizona within the Navajo Indian
Nation, this magnificent national monument is easily accessible by
US-191, either 62 miles south of US-160 that goes into Colorado, or
81 miles north of Interstate-40 off Exit 333 at Chambers.
